Cliff Burton was born on February 10, 1962 to Jan and Ray Burton. He has an older brother and sister, Connie and Scott. Cliff was quoted as saying 'I'm going to be the best bassist for my brother' after the death of Scott when Cliff was 13. Cliff went to the same school his mother taught at which had programs for special needs children. Cliff had no learning disabilities, but he was reading at a much higher level than other children his age. He went to Castro Valley High and he took several music classes and was always found reading somewhere. He went to college for Musical Theory. Cliff had been in a few bands before he was in Trauma. One day Metallica watched him play and they all thought 'Wow, this guy is a great' and they wanted him in the band. The discussed it with him and he agreed to join Metallica because he didn't like the path his band was going in. Although, Cliff had one exception; Metallica had to move up to San Fransisco, which was no problem for them because they hated L.A. He had a girlfriend at the time of his death, Corinne Lynn. He died on September 27th, 1986 in a tragic Bus accident in Ljungby, Sweden while touring for Master Of Puppets

I used to have the whole article that explained it but I’m not sure where it was, however I do remember most of it from memory
Basically what happened is the night before they played cards to pick bunks, or over this one bunk (don’t remember exactly) and Kirk ending up taking the one Cliff picked and Cliff slept in the one Kirk would have been stuck with. They were all sleeping the morning of, and early in the morning of September 27th, 1986 about 6:45 I believe, the bus driver claimed that they skidded on some black ice. The bus flipped over and onto the side of the highway in Ljungby, Sweden, throwing Cliff out the window closest to his bunk. They all got out and James was the one to find his legs sticking out. They had a crane try to lift the bus up and it fell again, some people speculate that he was still alive when that happened and the bus falling back down was what killed him. Basically James was really upset with all of this and believed the bus driver was lying and was driving drunk and walked miles down the highway for black ice and found none, it was even stated that the weather was too warm for ice to form. Another reporter had said that the skipmarks were that of someone who fell asleep at the wheel. It was a complete devestation to the whole band, and James was probably affected the most because he was really close to Cliff and he even kept his iconic rings that they had gotten at The Great Frog in London. I believe there are some photos out there with James wearing them during the Black Album era.
